Kloosterman Emigrants to America

The living was hard in the Zeeland countryside of the 19e century and there was no future for most of the Kloosterman family. So in the mid 19e century and later the Kloosterman family split up and some adventurous Kloosterman sons took a chance to find fortune and went to America. By 1860 half of the then thirty thousand Netherlands-born residents of the United States were living in Michigan, Iowa or in Wisconsin where Dutch Catholic emigrants had settled in the fifties. in its peak the US received 20 million European emigrants between the 1880 and 1920 censuses! From January 1892 to June 1897 and from 1901 to 1931 a number of 78602 immigrants from the Netherlands passed through Ellis Island.

On the list of Dutch emigrants from Zeeland to America the next list of names is known:

Name Emigration date Place Born Details

This is the same Adriana Paulina [and her brother Daniel Gerard] that immigrated with her parents Cornelis Kloosterman and Dina Vette on the SS Dubbeldam in 1892. It is possible that Adriana Paulina [and her brother Daniel Gerard was not living with the family at the time of immigration, but that she had moved elsewhere to work. Sometime later it was discovered by the recording officials that Adriana Paulina [and her brother Daniel Gerard] was no longer in Zeeland, so she was recorded in the Register of Emigrants. However, it appears that the officials wrote down an incorrect year of immigration. The ship's manifest verifies that Adriana Paulina [and her brother Daniel Gerard] did indeed leave for America in 1892, not 1894.
