When Willie Nelson, driving a beat-up green 1941 Buick with five overdue payments, first rolled into Nashville from Houston in the spring of 1960, his steely determination to make it as a singer and songwriter was quickly put to the test:

The Buick took me as far as downtown Nashville and then belched smoke and kind of sighed like an old horse and laid down and died. But I was in Nashville at last, ready to shoot it out with the big boys
